Grandma Violet’s Irish Soda Bread

This cherished family recipe was passed down in 1968 — rustic, simple, and perfect warm out of the oven.

Ingredients

  • 2½ cups flour
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ⅛ tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1½ cups liquid buttermilk
or 6 tbsp Saco buttermilk powder + water

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F (165°C).
  2. Flour an 8″ or 9″ round cake pan (no grease).
  3. In a bowl, mix dry ingredients with a whisk or fork.
  4. Add buttermilk gradually — just enough to make a soft dough.
  • Tip: If using dry buttermilk powder, mix it into dry ingredients and add water as needed.
  1. Dough should be soft but not crumbly or too wet.
  2. Spoon into pan — dough will be sticky.
  3. Bake for 30 minutes or until very light golden on top.
  4. Remove and wrap in a linen towel or paper towels until cooled.

Notes

  • Enjoy fresh and warm!
  • Wash your bowl and utensils right away — the dough hardens quickly.
